Making market information services work better for the poor in Uganda:
"There is growing pressure for farmers in countries such as Uganda to accelerate their efforts to commercialize production in the face of increasing market competition from neighboring countries and across the world. To assist farmers, a new generation of low cost market information services is being developed that takes advantage of information and communication technologies such as FM radios, mobile phones, and internet-based communications systems, to enable farmers to monitor and adjust to dynamic market conditions in local, national, and export markets. Although there is much interest in market information from farmers, other market chain actors, and service providers, there is skepticism from funding agencies to support such services over the long term, due to past failures. This study therefore aims to evaluate how farmers access and use market information to improve their market decision making. It also evaluates whether there are any advantages of collective action in using market information to improve marketing decisions. This is considered an important point of analysis as virtually all extension plans in Uganda currently use farmer groups as key element of their learning and intervention strategies. Survey results found that all farmers interviewed were able to access market information through radio and mobile phones. In Uganda, up to 94 percent of farmers interviewed owned a radio and 25 percent of farmers owned mobile phones. The HI gas content of galaxies around Abell 370, a galaxy cluster at z = 0.37
We used observations from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope to measure the
atomic hydrogen gas content of 324 galaxies around the galaxy cluster Abell 370
at a redshift of z = 0.37 (a look-back time of ~4 billion years). The HI 21-cm
emission from these galaxies was measured by coadding their signals using
precise optical redshifts obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The
average HI mass measured for all 324 galaxies is (6.6 +- 3.5)x10^9 solar
masses, while the average HI mass measured for the 105 optically blue galaxies
is (19.0 +- 6.5)x10^9 solar masses. The significant quantities of gas found
around Abell 370, suggest that there has been substantial evolution in the gas
content of galaxy clusters since redshift z = 0.37. The total amount of HI gas
found around Abell 370 is up to ~8 times more than that seen around the Coma
cluster, a nearby galaxy cluster of similar size. Despite this higher gas
content, Abell 370 shows the same trend as nearby clusters, that galaxies close
to the cluster core have lower HI gas content than galaxies further away. The
Abell 370 galaxies have HI mass to optical light ratios similar to local galaxy
samples and have the same correlation between their star formation rate and HI
mass as found in nearby galaxies. The average star formation rate derived from
[OII] emission and from de-redshifted 1.4 GHz radio continuum for the Abell 370
galaxies also follows the correlation found in the local universe. The large
amounts of HI gas found around the cluster can easily be consumed by the
observed star formation rate in the galaxies over the ~4 billion years (from z
= 0.37) to the present day.Comment: accepted by MNRA
The role of seed vouchers and fairs in promoting seed market development: Opportunities and limitations
This review aims to identify whether the seed voucher and SVF/DiNER model can be modified over time (e.g., 2-5 years) to build capacity within the seed sector to support the emergence of a sustainable, market-based seed system that offers quality, affordable seeds to smallholder male and female farmers. This scoping report presents a review of the wide variety of approaches that have been tested or recommended across International NGOs. These include both adjustments to the seed voucher and SVF/DiNER model itself as well as additional activities implemented alongside or in place of SVF/DiNER fairs to address market constraints and promote the emergence of alternative viable seed markets
The development and validation of a scoring tool to predict the operative duration of elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Background: The ability to accurately predict operative duration has the potential to optimise theatre efficiency and utilisation, thus reducing costs and increasing staff and patient satisfaction. With laparoscopic cholecystectomy being one of the most commonly performed procedures worldwide, a tool to predict operative duration could be extremely beneficial to healthcare organisations.
Methods: Data collected from the CholeS study on patients undergoing cholecystectomy in UK and Irish hospitals between 04/2014 and 05/2014 were used to study operative duration. A multivariable binary logistic regression model was produced in order to identify significant independent predictors of long (> 90 min) operations. The resulting model was converted to a risk score, which was subsequently validated on second cohort of patients using ROC curves.
Results: After exclusions, data were available for 7227 patients in the derivation (CholeS) cohort. The median operative duration was 60 min (interquartile range 45–85), with 17.7% of operations lasting longer than 90 min. Ten factors were found to be significant independent predictors of operative durations > 90 min, including ASA, age, previous surgical admissions, BMI, gallbladder wall thickness and CBD diameter. A risk score was then produced from these factors, and applied to a cohort of 2405 patients from a tertiary centre for external validation. This returned an area under the ROC curve of 0.708 (SE = 0.013, p  90 min increasing more than eightfold from 5.1 to 41.8% in the extremes of the score.
Conclusion: The scoring tool produced in this study was found to be significantly predictive of long operative durations on validation in an external cohort. As such, the tool may have the potential to enable organisations to better organise theatre lists and deliver greater efficiencies in care

Single-dose BNT162b2 vaccine protects against asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection
The BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) is being utilised internationally for mass COVID-19 vaccination. Evidence of single-dose protection against symptomatic disease has encouraged some countries to opt for delayed booster doses of BNT162b2, but the effect of this strategy on rates of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection remains unknown. We previously demonstrated frequent pauci- and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection amongst healthcare workers (HCWs) during the UK’s first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, using a comprehensive PCR-based HCW screening programme (Rivett et al., 2020; Jones et al., 2020). Here, we evaluate the effect of first-dose BNT162b2 vaccination on test positivity rates and find a fourfold reduction in asymptomatic infection amongst HCWs ≥12 days post-vaccination. These data provide real-world evidence of short-term protection against asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection following a single dose of BNT162b2 vaccine, suggesting that mass first-dose vaccination will reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission, as well as the burden of COVID-19 disease
